International Olympic Committee: Postponing the Tokyo Olympic to the Summer of 2021

At 8 pm local time on the 24th, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a telephone talk with the President of the International Olympic Committee Bach at the Prime Minister's residence to discuss the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters after the telephone talks that, first of all, the Japanese side and President of the International Olympic Committee Bach confirmed that there is no option to suspend the Tokyo Olympic, and Bach agreed with his opinion. Abe said that based on the current situation, in order to allow athletes from all over the world to participate in the competition in the best condition, audiences can watch the competition with safety and peace of mind, the Japanese side proposed whether the Tokyo Olympic could be postponed for about one year.

In response, Bach stated that he fully agreed with Japan's proposal. The two sides agreed to host the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games at the latest in the summer of 2021. Abe said the name of the postponed Olympic Games will remain "Tokyo 2020". As a proof of human victory over the COVID-19, Japan will host the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympics Games in a "complete form", and will continue to strengthen cooperation with the International Olympic Committee in the future and earnestly fulfill its responsibilities as the host country of the Olympic Games.
