Athletes Embark on an “Immersive” Tour of Laomendong and Zhonghua Gate

What happens when a world-class sporting event meets the breathtaking scenery and rich culture of Nanjing? This spring, as part of the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25, over 60 athletes from China and abroad took a break from competition to embark on a spring “Citywalk” tour of Nanjing’s most iconic historical sites. On the afternoon of March 23rd, they explored the Laomendong Historical and Cultural District and the Zhonghua Gate section of the Ming City Wall, immersing themselves in the city’s unique blend of history and modern vibrancy.

Strolling Through Laomendong: A Fusion of Old and New

With gray brick walls, stone-paved streets, traditional horse-head roofs, and classical architecture, Laomendong’s rich historical atmosphere transported the athletes into the past, allowing them to experience the cultural heritage of Nanjing in a unique and immersive way.

As they wandered through Jieziyuan, Santiaoying, and the Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, the athletes engaged with traditional Chinese crafts and folk arts. Chinese sprinter LIANG Xiaojing, who had just set a new personal best in the women’s 60m final, was particularly excited about visiting Nanjing:“I’m thrilled to be back in Nanjing, my ‘lucky ground’! The city’s blend of ancient charm and modern vibrancy is truly captivating, and it’s amazing to see so many international friends enjoying it too.”

Climbing Zhonghua Gate: A Journey Through History

After leaving Laomendong, the athletes arrived at Zhonghua Gate, where they were deeply impressed by its grand structure and historical significance. Standing atop the ancient city wall, they enjoyed a panoramic view of Nanjing, while while listening to the guide's introduction to the history, culture, and the city's efforts to have the ancient walls recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Chinese track and field athlete CHEN Yujie was particularly moved, saying:“Walking through the city, I could truly feel Nanjing’s blend of prosperity and historical depth. The preservation of these ancient sites is remarkable!”

This sunny spring “Citywalk” gave the athletes a chance to connect with Nanjing’s deep-rooted culture and dynamic energy. Many expressed their excitement to return in the future and explore more of this historic and vibrant city.
