On the evening of March 23 (Beijing time), the men’s 1500m final saw an intense battle between top contenders. Norwegian star Jakob Ingebrigtsen made a decisive move mid-race, surging to the front and crossing the finish line first in 3:38.79 to win gold. British runner Neil Gourley finished close behind in 3:39.07, securing silver, while American Luke Houser took bronze with a time of 3:39.17.
As a multiple world record holder, Jakob Ingebrigtsen is no stranger to historic performances. At the Tokyo Olympics, he set a new Olympic record of 3:28.32, becoming the youngest Olympic champion in men’s 1500m history. He also holds the indoor men’s 1500m world record and the European outdoor 1500m record. Ranked world No. 1 in the event, Ingebrigtsen once again proved his dominance in middle-distance running.
“It was an incredible race! I felt great and am very happy with my performance in this championship. Competing in Nanjing and bringing home two gold medals is amazing,” Ingebrigtsen shared in a post-race interview. He also praised the electric atmosphere, saying, “The crowd here is fantastic. You can feel their energy not just inside the stadium, but also in the warm-up area and outside the venue.”Looking ahead, he stated that he will return to training to prepare for the outdoor season.
British runner Neil Gourley, who secured silver with a time of 3:39.07, vividly recalled the dramatic final lap:“I remember it clearly. It was a hectic race, and I had to make a split-second decision: go outside or take the inside lane. I chose the inside, and that move helped me surge ahead and finish strong.” Gourley also praised the enthusiastic crowd and the atmosphere at the event, adding, “This is my first time in Nanjing. I didn’t have time to explore the city because I was racing all weekend, but the people here have been incredibly welcoming. The hotel, the track, everything has been fantastic.”
