On March 23(Beijing time), the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 25 hosted the highly anticipated women’s 60m hurdles final. In this world-class track and field event, Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas stormed to victory with a time of 7.72 seconds, securing the gold medal. Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji claimed silver with 7.73 seconds, while Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent took bronze in 7.74 seconds.
At the start of the race, as the gun fired, Charlton exploded off the blocks like an arrow, displaying fluid and swift hurdle technique. Each hurdle was cleared effortlessly, and she ultimately crossed the finish line in 7.72 seconds, setting a new season-best and taking first place.Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji demonstrated impressive explosiveness at the start, taking an early lead with a reaction time of 0.138 seconds, showcasing her sharp reflexes. She secured silver with 7.73 seconds. Meanwhile, Ackera Nugent from Jamaica, who initially fell behind, executed a strong mid-race comeback and powered through the finish line at 7.74 seconds, also achieving her season-best to earn bronze.
“This victory and defending my title mean so much to me. My competitors were incredibly strong, and I knew the final times would be very close. When I saw that I had won, I was thrilled. It felt like all my hard work had paid off. Right now, I just want to enjoy this moment,” said Charlton in her post-race interview.When asked about her impression of Nanjing, she expressed her fondness for the city: “This is my second time competing in Nanjing, and the warmth and friendliness of the people make me feel at home. It’s definitely a city I’d love to return to in the future.”
Meanwhile, China’s WU Yanni, a highly anticipated contender, delivered a remarkable performance in the preliminary rounds, clocking 8.05 seconds to set a new personal best. She further improved in the semifinals, running 8.01 seconds, once again breaking her personal record and shattering the 11-year-old national record. However, she narrowly missed qualifying for the final, as the 8th-fastest semifinal time was 8.00 seconds.Reflecting on her performance, WU remarked:“Even though I didn’t make the final, I’m proud to have improved my personal best. Competing against top European and American athletes is tough, so I just tried to keep up with their pace as much as I could. I’m grateful for the support of my coach and teammates, and I’ll keep working hard to showcase my strength on even bigger stages.”
